What is superconductor?

Superconductors are metals or alloys that when cooled to very low temperatures (approaching zero kelvin) exhibit properties allowing electrical current to flow with zero resistance. This unique feature allows this material to be used in scientific experiments which help discover new elementary particles of matter, such as the famed "God Particle," also known as the Higgs Boson.

WHAT METALS ARE TYPICALLY FOUND IN SUPERCONDUCTORS?

The black regions are usually an alloy of titanium and niobium. The surrounding region (the red color) is copper.

What is EDM cutting?

EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) cutting is a method of machining which uses an electrical potential difference between the tool and the part to cut.

Why do we use EDM cutting?

We use EDM machining techniques because this is the best way to accurately and precisely cut metal. There are numerous advantages.

  1. Extremely accurate thickness measurements. Accurate to .001 inches.
  2. The surfaces on both sides are extremely flat and parallel to one another. A tenth inch thick piece can stand on edge.
  3. The surface finish on EDM cutting is a consistent matte-like finish which is very easy to bring to a polish. No saw marks or grain to polish out.
  4. Our flat surfaces require less polishing and therefore less material loss. In our experience, approximately .001-.002 inches is all that is needed to bring the part to a high-gloss/mirror polish.

HOW MUCH DOES SUPERCONDUCTOR WEIGH?

Superconductors have a density very close to copper. Approximately 8.9 g/cm^3 (.324 lb/in^3).

Material Properties

Superconductor is designed to carry electrical current by utilizing its unique copper and niobium construction. We are happy to be able to offer this rare material to the maker, art and design communities. Superconductor engineering considerations did not include water-jetting, milling, CNC machining or exposing the material to impacts, other external forces and manufacturing methods. Copper and niobium have different material properties (copper is softer than niobium), and are not welded together. Like in any superconductor, undue forces can separate the copper and niobium.

HOW DO YOU CLEAN SUPERCONDUCTOR?

Copper naturally oxides from a shiny surface to a patina which is typically seen on pennies. Many factors determine how quickly copper oxidizes, such as surface finish and environmental factors. Weak acids such as lemon juice,  vinegar or commercially available copper polishing products will help remove the oxidized layer. The Niobium does not patina, it is not a reactive metal.
